Haarer, Daniel L.

Daniel L. Haarer, 82, of Goshen died Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
He was born October 6, 1939 in Shipshewana to Sylvester and Hilda (Bontrager) Haarer.
On June 9, 1962 he married Twyla Mae Kauffman at 8th St. Mennonite Church, Goshen. She died December 26, 2016.
Survivors include a son, Brad (Arlynn) Haarer of Tampa, Florida; a daughter, Zoann (Tim) Wall of Goshen; two grandchildren, Chloe and Benjamin Wall and a step-granddaughter, Jenna Miller.
Also surviving are five siblings, Donald (Waneta) Haarer of Goshen, Verlin (Doris) Haarer of Huntertown, Lowell (Miriam) Haarer of Linville, Virginia, Eunice Maust of Goshen and Esther (Roger) Wenger of Shipshewana.
Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Christian, Christopher and Nathaniel Wall.
Mr. Haarer was a member of Silverwood Mennonite Church. He graduated from Goshen College and earned his master’s degree from the University of Illinois.
Dan was always interested in helping his neighbors. He was executive director at The Window, and also worked for the Elkhart County Welfare Department.
Dan’s body was donated to the IU Medical School in the interest of anatomical medical education research.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 30, 2022 at 3 p.m. at Silverwood Mennonite Church, 1745 W. Lincoln Ave., Goshen. Pastor Donna Mast will officiate.

Haarer, Paul W.
October 3, 1927 - Marah 27, 2022
Paul W. Haarer, 94, of Goshen, formerly of Shipshewana, passed away Sunday morning, March 27, [2022] at his residence. He was born on October 3, 1927, in LaGrange County, to William Henry and Fannie (Eash) Haarer. On June 3, 1951 in LaGrange, he married Shirley Mishler; she died September 25, 2011. Then on June 28, 2015 in Shipshewana he married Gladys Ellen (Schrock) Troyer; she died July 4, 2018.
Surviving is a daughter, Rebecca Haarer of Shipshewana and a son, Charles W. (Barbara) Haarer from Middlebury, two granddaughters Chelsea (Wesley) Gorsuch of Middlebury and Erin (Shawn) Schrader of Goshen; a brother, William (Shirley) Haarer of Sarasota, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; five brothers, David, Samuel, Aldine, Sylvester, and Leonard Haarer, two sisters, Corona Weldy and Mary Ellen Troyer.
Throughout his career he was co-owner of Twin Lakes Construction Company, Howe, IN, and Haarer’s Quaint Shop of Shipshewana. Paul was a longtime active director of Mennonite Disaster Service and served as a delegate to the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference. He was also an active member of Marion Mennonite Church. Paul enjoyed antiquing and many who attended auctions will remember him as #55, or “Double Nickel”. His final occupation was that of a taxi driver for the Amish community, which took him into the countryside of his youth and among people who shared his native language, Pennsylvania Dutch. His last year of life was happily spent at Greencroft where he continued to cultivate new friendships and pray for his family daily.
A private burial service for his immediate family will be on Thursday, March 31st, at Shore Cemetery, Shipshewana, conducted by Reverend Ron Roth. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be given to World Missionary Press or Marion Christian Fellowship.
Harnish, Evelyn M. Hershey
August 4, 1937 - February 23, 2022
Evelyn M. (Hershey) Harnish, 84, of Lancaster, PA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday morning, February 23, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Salisbury Township, she was the daughter of the late H. Rine and Grace (Hershey) Hershey. She graduated from the former Salisbury High School in 1955. After graduation, she worked as a teller at New Holland Farmers National Bank where her father was a bank director.
Evelyn married John M. Harnish on March 2, 1957. They purchased a dairy and chicken farm named Pond Bank Farms near Elizabethtown. Later, in 1964, they moved to a larger dairy farm near Willow Street. She partnered with her husband and actively participated in farm life.
Evelyn used her bank teller skills by becoming the farm's bookkeeper. She was responsible for feeding and raising Holstein calves. The calves would look forward to her greeting every morning and evening. She also enjoyed caring for her cats and their kittens.
Evelyn was a longstanding member of Willow Street Mennonite Church where she sang in the choir. She was an active member of the Lancaster County Society of Farm Women No. 22 and contributed recipes to their cookbooks. Also, she liked to work on puzzles, gardening, reading and playing Scrabble with her sisters.
In addition to raising three children, she enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her grandchildren looked forward to visiting her. She was always up for a board game. During their visits, there would always be kittens to play with and slices of cheese to eat.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, John, and three children, Jeff Harnish (Patty), Broadlands, VA, Greg Harnish, Burnt Cabins, and Kimberly Gehman (Wendell), Hot Springs, SD; 10 grandchildren, Kristin Kolansky (Dan), Sara Hicks (Brian), Alex Harnish, Anna Harnish, Ben Harnish, Shelby Harnish, Callie Klopfenstein (Peter), Colton Gehman (Jessica), Carson Gehman, Cade Gehman; and five great grandchildren. Evelyn is also survived by her sisters, Thelma White and G. Ruth Clark. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three siblings, Marvin Hershey, Nora Hershey Lefever, and Marian Neff Hanna.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon, March 2, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 East Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, PA. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. There will be no public viewing. The family will receive guests at the church on Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Harnish, G. Evan
June 13, 1936 - October 28, 2022
G. Evan Harnish, 86, of Leola, passed peacefully to his heavenly home on Friday, October 28, 2022. Born in Bart Township, PA, he was the son of the late David F. and Ruth Herr Harnish. Evan was the devoted and loving husband of Dorothy "Dottie" Jean Harnish for 58 years.
Following graduation from Lancaster Mennonite High School, he worked on his father's dairy farm for a short time before serving with Alternative (1W) Service at Neuropsychiatric Hospital in New Jersey. Evan drove truck for several years before working at Sperry New Holland/Ford New Holland for 28 years. After retirement, he returned to the road and drove delivery routes for Quick Courier Service.
Evan was a faithful member of Hinkletown Mennonite Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and participated in Hinkletown's family ministries. He volunteered as part of the CARE Alabama prison ministry.
Evan was a skilled mechanic who thoroughly enjoyed finding solutions and repairing any malfunctioning equipment. "Pop Pop's Garage" provided many repair services over the years.
In addition to his wife, Evan is survived by his three children and their spouses, David (Sandra King), Darrel (Tina High), and Donna (Neil Reinford); and six grandchildren, Emily Harnish, Derek Harnish (Lydia Tissue), Megan Harnish, Janae Harnish, Joshua Reinford, and Isabel Reinford. He was preceded in death by his brother David Ferril Harnish.

Harnish, Lois Arlene Buckwalter
July 26 1940 - February 9, 2022
Lois Arlene (Buckwalter) Harnish, 81, passed away Wednesday morning, February 9, 2022 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, where she had resided for the past several years. She was the wife of the late J. Nelson Harnish, who died in 2009, and the daughter of the late Paul & Ethel Buckwalter.
Lois graduated in 1958 from East Lampeter High school, a member of the last class to complete their education from that school. After marriage, she worked with her husband on their farm located on Beaver Valley Pike, Willow Street, for many years before retiring to Strasburg. She was a member of the Lampeter Fair Board and enjoyed working at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm after retirement. She was a life-long member of Mellinger Mennonite Church, where in addition to other volunteer activities, she served faithfully with her husband as trustees and enjoyed the friendship of the Circle of Love Sunday School Class. She always loved music and caring for flowers, both inside her home and in her outdoor gardens.
She is survived by 4 sons, Kenneth, husband of Chris, New Providence, Barry, husband of Vicki, Willow Street, Jay, husband of Tracy, Brunswick, OH, and Mark, husband of Jenn, Lancaster. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren: Debra, Douglas, Matthew, Erin, Lauren, Makenna and Scott, and 4 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Doris, wife of Wilmer Nolt, Lancaster, also survives. In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Marjean Harnish.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 14, at 3:00 P.M. at the Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, PA. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. and also on Monday following the service. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the adjoining church cemetery.

Harnish, Marthalene "Faye"
September 28, 1966 - February 8, 2022
Marthalene "Faye" Harnish, 55, of Morgantown, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Sunny Crest Home, Inc.
Born in Jennersville, she was the daughter of the late John K. and Dorothy M. (Sollenberger) Harnish.
Prior to residing at Sunny Crest Home, she attended Living Water Mennonite Fellowship. She enjoyed coloring, making crafts, listening to music, and appreciated time spent with family.
Faye is survived by eight siblings, J. Raymond, husband of Rhoda (Smoker) Harnish of Oxford, Glenn R., husband of Julie (Siegrist) Harnish of Bethel, J. Lorraine Harnish of Denver, Ellen L., wife of Mose Beachy of Sugar Creek, OH, Erma J., wife of Lawrence Shultz of Willow Street, Velma J. Guinther of Conowingo, MD, C. Rosene, wife of Ivan High, Jr. of Pine Grove, Beverly K., wife of Ronald Mummau of Quarryville; 26 nieces and nephews and 79 great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Interment will be private in New Providence Mennonite Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2022, at 2 PM at Living Water Mennonite Fellowship, 160 Chapel View Drive, Reinholds.

Evelyn Lenora "Nory" (Kirk) Harris 86, of Sullivan, Illinois passed away at 6:36 p.m. Monday November 28, 2022 at Aspen Creek (senior care home) of Sullivan, Illinois.
Celebration of Life services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday December 3, 2022 at Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ with Vanessa Patient and Brigham Hagerman officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will take place at Greenhill Cemetery in Sullivan, Illinois immediately after the service. Arrangements by the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan.
Lenora was born August 16, 1936 in Sullivan, the daughter of Shirley and Evelyn Keen Kirk. She was a lifelong member of the Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ. She married Rodney Harris on July 23, 1960 in Sullivan, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on April 14, 2022.
Lenora was a creative and talented person who created beauty in all she did. She loved to sew, upholster furniture, embroider, decorate, and arrange flowers. She made elaborate costumes for the Little Theatre, her church, family, and friends. Taking inspiration from her world travels, she learned Japanese flower arranging and the Austrian art of lacemaking, among many other arts. Her love of dolls led Lenora and her sister Mary to start a business called Treasure Haus where they imported and sold German-made “Lizzie” dolls. She also had a passion for the past and loved collecting photos and family histories from distant relatives scattered all across the country and world.
She especially loved the Christmas season and made it magical, decorating with elegant and handcrafted ornaments, bringing the family together, setting a beautiful table for holiday meals, and making her house a home for everyone. She loved walking with her family and was joyous in greeting loved ones and friends with her laughter and smile. Most of all, Lenora excelled at creating a happy, enchanted childhood, first for her own children, and then for her grandchildren.
Surviving are her daughters Jacqueline S. (Matthew) Lane of Sullivan and M. Allison (Steve) Witt of Monticello; son Jonathan C. (Elsa) Harris of Aliso Viejo, California; brother Ralph (Barbara) Kirk of Sullivan; sister Mary White of Sullivan; grandchildren Adriene Lane, Brendon Lane, Caleb Lane, Emmeline Witt, Liam Witt and Jonah Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers Julian, Frank, Leon and Quentin.
To honor her passion for history and genealogy, memorials are suggested to the Moultrie County Historical Society, or to Moultrie County PAWs to honor her love of dogs.
Hartman, Harold Wade
May 31, 1928 - April 8, 2022
Harold Wade Hartman, 93, of Goshen, passed away Friday, April 8, 2022, at his home, surrounded by family.
He was born May 31, 1928, in Glendale, California, to Oscar and Mildred (Bixel) Hartman.
On September 4, 1949 he married Catherine E. Bohn in Pandora, Ohio. She died November 9, 2019.
Survivors include three children, Jolene Ritchie and Rita (John) Harnish, both of Elkhart and Steve (Laura) Hartman of Fishers; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 70 years, Catherine Hartman; a daughter, Annette Moneyheffer and two brothers, Gordon and Kenneth Hartman.
Mr. Hartman was a math teacher at Northside Jr. High School for many years and a member of Hively Avenue Mennonite Church.
He filled his life with the things he loved including woodworking, music, hiking, camping and traveling. Harold faced life's challenges with a positive outlook and a sense of humor. He had a gift for engaging with others and lighting up a room.
Harold and Kate built a house together on the Peace River in Florida where they spent many happy winters. They loved the location so much they named it Paradise.
According to Harold and Kate's wishes their ashes will be mixed and scattered during a private family service.
Memorial donations may be given to Camp Friedenswald Youth Program. A butterfly sculpture has already been erected at the camp in Harold and Kate's memory.
Hartman, Paul Samuel
December 15, 1927 - September 30, 2022
Paul Samuel Hartman, 94, formerly of Hinton, Va., passed away on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Georgia, where he resided for five years.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Hartman and Lewis Hartman; and a sister, Ruth Weaver. He is survived by his daughter, Rose Mary Heatwole (Byard); a son, Ed Hartman (Patti); two sisters, Rosalie Eshleman (Robert) and Anne Mae Hostetler (John); six grandsons; one granddaughter; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and 14 nieces and nephews.
In 1945, he married Dorothy Katherine Cave of Linville, Va. Paul was the oldest member of Rawley Springs Mennonite Church. He was an active song leader, Sunday School teacher and enjoyed investing in the lives of young men and took them on many adventures, including fishing, boat outings on the North River, and hiking and overnight stays at his cabin on Cooper’s Mountain. He was involved in a lifetime of music. He sang with “The Mennonite Hour” Singers. He directed the West Valley Chorus of the Va. Mennonite Conference in the 1960s. He was the oldest surviving member of the Eight Singing Men.
Paul was a part-time driver of Quicks Bus which took him many places in the U.S. and Canada. Many will remember him as the owner of many different businesses which include Superior Concrete, Rockingham Driving School, Valley Rentals, and Valley Paper Recycling.
He was affectionately known as Grandpa-Paul and Pa-Pa by young and old alike. He enjoyed hunting, flying his J-3 Piper Cub, and often went horseback riding. With a serving heart, he volunteered with MDS and did short term mission work in Central and South America.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Burkeland Mennonite Church in Waynesboro, Ga., and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Bank Mennonite Church in Dayton, Va. The funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Bank Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at Rawley Springs Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Hartzler, Blanche K. Murray
July 22, 1922 - May 17, 2022
Blanche K. Hartzler, 99, of Goshen, died Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at Greencroft Health Care.
She was born July 22, 1922 in Gasport, New York to Elmer F. and Lydia (Hooley) Murray.
She married Ralph G. Hartzler on August 10, 1944 in Gasport, New York. He died August 23, 2001.
Blanche is survived by six children, Dwain J. (Marilyn) Hartzler of Goshen, David D. Hartzler of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Murray G. (Anita) Hartzler of Florence, South Carolina, Karen (Mel) Miller of Akron, New York, Joella (John Bernard) Hartzler of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Kay (Mervin) Reist of North Liberty; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Marilyn) Murray of Hesston, Kansas and two sisters, Doris Klingelsmith of Sarasota, Florida and Shirley Miller of Harrisburg, Virginia.
Along with her parents and husband, Blanche was preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers, Joella Troyer, Gladys Peebles, Grace Nelson, Ruth Mawhinney, Orpha Miller, Elmer, Franklin, Joseph, Paul and Gerald Murray.
Blanche was a member of Waterford Mennonite Church. She worked for Greencroft food service. She was a proud to own and operate Goshen Soccer Supply out of her basement.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 21 at Violett Cemetery.
Hartzler, Ernest Benjamin
December 23, 1938 - April 10, 2022
Ernest Benjamin Hartzler, age 83 of Mechanicsburg, PA passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at his home. Born December 23, 1938 in Belleville, PA, Ernest was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Byler) Hartzler.
Ernest was a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School Class of 1956 which was the second graduating class since the school's inception. He was a member of the PA National Guard where he was the recipient of the General T. J. Stewart Medal. Ernest retired from Barjan Corporation in Mechanicsburg after 23 years of service and was a former employee of Rite Aid Corporation for 20 years and Food Fair.
Ernest was a member of Slate Hill Mennonite Church and enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables, landscaping around his house and was an avid country music fan especially of George Jones.
Ernest was preceded in death by his companion Betty Holland, and by his brother Eugene Hartzler, and three sisters Florence Showalter, Lois Runyon, and Maxine Zook. Surviving are his two children Robert E. Holland (Evamarie) of Mechanicsburg and Suzanne M. Holland-Decker (George) of Enola, three grandchildren Eric Decker (Molly), R. Anthony Holland, and Joseph Holland (Ashley); three great grandchildren Lily Decker, Parker, and Chase Holland; three sisters Alice Hostetter, Bertha Showalter, and Martha Rohrer and by Pamela Cooper and family.

Haverstick, Henry "Chester"
February 2, 1918 - April 28, 2022
Henry Chester Haverstick, born February 2, 1918, of Manor Township, passed on to his Heavenly home on April 28, 2022 at the Mennonite Home. He was the son of the late Harvey and Ada Stauffer Haverstick. Orphaned at the age of 10, he was raised by his newly married uncle, the late Benjamin G. and Martha Stauffer.
The mother of his five sons was Elizabeth (Betty) Lyons Haverstick who died in 1980. He is survived by his wife Laura Zimmerman Haverstick, and his sons James K. (Miriam Newcomer) and J. Robert Haverstick, all of Lancaster; four grandchildren Andrea (Jerry) Lehman, Douglas (Dixie) Haverstick, Maria Fountain, Patricia Haverstick (Kreg Weaver) and 9 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were three sons Harold C., David L, and Glenn R. Haverstick, one grandchild, Lisa D. Haverstick, and his two brothers, Benjamin S. and H. Lester.
Faith was important in Chester's life, and he was a life-long member of the Millersville Mennonite Church. He had been a member of the Gideons International, Lancaster South Camp. At the urging of some friends, Chet self-published the story of his life at age 93, "My Life as an Inventor, Parent, Partner".
Chester was very mechanically gifted and co-founded Haverstick Bros. as an automobile repair shop with his twin brother Lester in 1946.The business evolved over the years into a welding and machine shop, specializing in hydraulics. The Haverstick brothers enjoyed the challenge of repairing difficult mechanical problems! They held a US Patent for a hydraulically operated load handling system for trucks, which they invented. Today that business is operated by the third generation as Haverstick Bros. Hydraulics.
Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at the Millersville Mennonite Church, 437 Manor Ave., Millersville, PA 17551. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at the Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.

Madie Catherine (Knox) Headings, age 78, of Jay, OK, passed away peacefully at 7:40 pm, Monday, January 31, 2022.
She was born on March 25, 1943, in Prophetstown, IL, to Harold and Florence (Hostetler) Knox.
On June 24, 1962, she was united in marriage to Ezra S. Headings in Tampico, IL.
She is survived by her husband Ezra Headings; her children, Hilda Horton, Raymond Headings, Flora Thomas, Joseph Headings, Dorcas Brown, Albert Headings, Edna Thayer, John Headings, Vernon Headings, Jonas Headings, Esther Herztler, Jade Headings, Desiree Headings, Monique Suiter, and Chauntel Wipf; 57 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers, John Knox, Henry Knox, Orvie Knox, Luke Knox; 4 sister, Luella Kropf, Lydia Kropf, Viola Hostetler; Laura Christner; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Harold Knox and Florence (Hostetler) Knox; 2 infant daughters, Saloma Headings and Elsie Headings; 1 brother, Archie Knox; 4 sisters, Bessie Eigsti, Elsie Knox, June Hostetler, and Virginia Christner.

Edith A. Heatwole (82) of North Lawrence, OH passed away peacefully on January 4, 2022.
She was born in Columbiana, OH on April 5, 1939 to Harvey and Susannah (Vanpelt) Shaum. She accepted Christ in her youth and was a faithful member of the Valley View Mennonite Church.
On July 17,1960 she married Myron Heatwole. He died December 29,2021. They shared 61 years together.
She is survived by children: Ellen (Jonathan) Steiner of Clarion, Pennsylvania; Mark (Marcella) Heatwole of North Lawrence, Ohio; Suetta (Larry) Geiser of Kirksville, Missourri; Joyce (Merle) Geiser of Apple Creek, Ohio; Janet (Edward) Martin of Whittemore, Michigan; Phyllis (Harlan) Sensenig of Conrath, Wisconsin; Marlene (Jonathan) Weaver of Bluford, Illinois; 53 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are six brothers: Jason (Lillian) Shaum of Columbiana,, OH;Virgil (Sally) of Apple Creek, OH; Elvin (Mary) Shaum, of Leetonia, OH; Melvin (Dorothy) Shaum of Snover, MI; Kenneth (Arlene) Shaum of Nappanee, IN; Raymond (Faye) Shaum of Orrville, OH; Two sisters, Kathryn (Martin) Bender of Grantsville, MD; Esther Shaum of Columbiana, OH.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Myron; one brother, Nelson Shaum; one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Heatwole, Mark Etter
December 6, 1943 - September 21, 2022
A man of faith, devoted husband and father was born Dec. 6, 1943, in Harrisonburg, Va. to Roy and Mabel Heatwole. He passed away unexpectedly at home on Sept. 21, 2022.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ellen (Showalter); sons, Craig (Joy) of Oakton, Va., Eric (Michelle) of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Chad (Susy Bordin) of Pittsford, N.Y.; his siblings, Milton (Mary Ethel), Charlotte Burkholder (Marlin) and Glendon (Cheryl); and eight grandchildren, Alexis, Avery Call (Grant), Meredith, Seth, Mitchell, John, David and Maria.
Mark worked at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. until his retirement in 1999.
Following retirement, some of his accomplishments included biking across the United States the summer of 1999, hiking the entire Appalachian Trail (2,166 miles) with his wife, Ellen, in 2000. He also became an award winning master craftsmen with a focus on lathe turning and most recently became a published author with his book, “Two Steps at a Time,” a travel log of their AT hike.
His faith in Jesus Christ was at the center of his life and helped guide and direct his steps in everything he did and how he led those around him. We are grateful because of his salvation we know he is home in heaven.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Va. at 2:00 p.m. with calling beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Heatwole, Susan Joanna Good
January 8, 1961 - April 6, 2022
Susan Joanna Heatwole, 61, went to be with the Lord on April 6, 2022, at her home in Dayton, Va. She passed away peacefully while in the presence of family. Having battled with cancer for years, Susan lived out her final months with courage and a Christ-led spirit. She will be greatly missed by many.
Susan was born on Jan. 8, 1961, in Rockingham County, Va. Her parents were the late Lewis and Edith Good. On June 20, 1981, she married her one true love, the late Steven Heatwole, who was tragically taken from this world on July 11, 1991.
Throughout her life, Susan’s consistent passions were music, gardening and her sons. She would spend much of her time dedicated to these aspects of her life. She also truly loved spending quality time with friends through long walks, coffee or teatime, and intellectual conversations. One of her favorite pastimes was playing bluegrass music on her front porch, equipped with harmonica and guitar. Her musical interests transcended location as she sang and played music wherever possible, often entertaining in front of large audiences. While experiencing many challenges through the years, her zest for life never withered. Amongst her greatest joys was sharing time with her sons, their wives and their children. Susan also cared greatly about her community and espoused a service-oriented heart. She was an active member at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, where she attended for nearly 20 years.
Above everything, Susan loved the Lord.
Susan is survived by her four sons: Jefferson Heatwole and wife, Vanessa, Michael Heatwole and wife, Kiera, Ashley (Ash) Heatwole and wife, Amy, and Winston Martin. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Steven II, Luiza, Ashton and Nicolas, as well as all five of her siblings, Franklin Good, Deborah Showalter, Christian Good, Michelle Showalter and Helen Brunk.
A viewing is to be held at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church on Sunday, April 10, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be a service to honor the life of Susan on Monday, April 11, starting at 1:00 p.m. The service will also be held at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church. Friends and family are all welcome to attend.
The burial will be privately held for Susan’s immediate family only.

Hege, Wilda Irene Rhodes
June 17, 1942 — May 29, 2022
Wilda Irene (Rhodes) Hege died of a severe stroke May 29, 2022, at the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 12 days. She was born June 17, 1942 in Columbiana, Ohio to Mark and Ina (VanPelt) Rhodes. She married P. Harold Hege on October 17, 1964. They lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, various mission points, and, for the last year and a half, in Tremonton, Utah. She was a member of the Riverside Mennonite Church in Kenton, Ohio.
In her youth, Wilda chose to give her life to Christ. She served Him as a thrifty homemaker for her family and others—cooking, sewing, gardening, and tending house plants. Her life was enriched by extending hospitality and sending mail. Her love for wholesome poetry is reflected in the lines she wrote in her youth and in the many poems she copied in cursive, filling personal notebooks or sending on to friends.
Wilda is survived by her husband, P. Harold Hege of Tremonton, Utah and her eight children—Regina (Mrs. David Horst) of Loma, Colorado; Nathan (Evelyn) of Tremonton, Utah; Crystal (Mrs. Carl Steiner) of Hawley, Texas; Seth (Grace) of Plainview, Texas; Lamar (Sheryl) of Deer Park, Washington; Lynn (Brenda) of Nortonville, Kentucky; Bethany (Mrs. Mark Shertzer), of Deer Park, Washington; and Jewel of Tremonton, Utah. She is survived by four sisters—Hazel (Mrs. Joel Mosemann), Eva (Mrs. David Weaver), Beulah (Mrs. Harold Petre), and Dorothy (Mrs. Ron Cross). She is also survived by four brothers—Webster, Lee, Allan, and Carl Rhodes; 52 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother Harvey, by two grandchildren—Amber Horst and Trenton Horst, and by one great-grandson—Tyrell Horst.
Friends may call Thursday, June 2, from 1:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 at the Home Arts Building, Box Elder County Fairgrounds. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, at the same location. Interment will follow at the Salt Creek Cemetery.

Elva Helmuth, age 81 of Nappanee, IN, passed away at 7:53pm on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at her residence after an extended illness. She was born on November 25, 1940 in Etna Green, IN to Floyd and Mary Ann (Miller) Chupp. On May 8, 1962 Elva married Vernon “Lee” Helmuth in Etna Green. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2019. She was a lifetime resident of the Etna Green area and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
Surviving and mourning her loss are her 3 children: Rebecca Terisa (Marlin) Chupp of Nappanee, Steve Helmuth of Nappanee, and Mary Jane Helmuth of Leesburg, IN; 5 grandchildren: LeAnn Renee Chupp of Nappanee, Marcus Shawn Chupp of Nappanee, Michelle Diane Garza of North Hutchinson, FL, Melanie Diane Garza of Leesburg, and Edison Garza of Leesburg; 1 great granddaughter Nina Nicole Hart of North Webster, IN; 3 sisters: Edna Chupp of Nappanee, Katie Bontrager of Shipshewana, IN, and Martha (Toby) Yoder of Goshen, IN; brother-in-law Melvin Stutzman of Etna Green; 2 sisters-in-law, Ellen Chupp and Minerva Chupp, both of Nappanee; 2 step-brothers, LeRoy Miller of Munfordville, KY and David (Katie) Miller of Middlefield, OH; 1 step-sister, Kathryn (Eli) Weaver of Middlefield, OH; and a step-brother-in-law, Albert Weaver of Meadville, PA.

Ida Mae Helmuth, 72, passed away 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Greencroft Nursing Center, Goshen, after a 2-year battle with cancer. She was born to Eli and Freeda (Schweitert) Helmuth on September 15, 1949, in Nappanee.
Ida Mae attended school in Nappanee and Aux Chandelle, Bristol. She loved her cats, traveling and her many friends. Ida Mae was a housekeeper for a number of years for many people in the area. She was a member of Harvest Community Church, Goshen.
Surviving are siblings, Mervin (Sharon Moyer) Helmuth, Goshen, Elsie Beachy, Elkhart, Esther (Enos) Yoder, Leon, Iowa, Jerry (Carolyn Gingerich) Helmuth, Wakarusa, James (Mary, significant other) Helmuth, Goshen, sister-in-law, Pat (Bender) Helmuth, Nappanee and many nieces & nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, brother, Robert Helmuth, 2 sisters, Margaret Jean Helmuth and Sue Ramer.

J. Merle Herr of Broadway, Va., died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at home with his family at his side. "Merle" was born July 16, 1932, son of the late John H. Herr and Elizabeth Reinhart Hess Herr.
He is survived by his wife, Veronica Ranck; also his children, Leon F. Perkins, John R. Herr, the Rev. Dr. Rose Herr, James A. Herr, Cynthia J. Herr Eshleman and Janet L. Herr Dean. Also, his stepchildren, Sylvia Ranck Martin, Keith Ranck, Kevin Ranck, and Denise Ranck. In addition to his children, he is survived by 28 grand and step-grandchildren and 42 great and step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Merle was predeceased by the mother of his children, Arlene L. Shenk Herr; his brothers, Paul H., Mark H. and Glenn H., as well as sisters, Elizabeth H. Herr Peifer and Emma Alma Herr Groff.

Henry D. Herschberger, 97 of Arthur, Illinois passed away at 8:04 P.M. on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at The Arthur Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the Arthur Mennonite Church, 710 East Park Street, in Arthur, Illinois. Pastor Glen Rhodes will officiate. Henry was born on December 1, 1924, in Douglas County near Arthur, Illinois. He was a son of David B. and Lizzie (Miller) Herschberger. He married Mary S. Beachy on December 21, 1944, in Arthur, Illinois. She passed away on October 20, 2020. They lived in Holy Matrimony for 75 years and 10 months.
Henry is survived by three children: Larry and his wife Sheryll of Arthur IL, Richard “Rich” and his wife Vicki of Arthur IL, and Carol Kennel and her husband Rod of Arthur IL. Grandchildren: Colby Herschberger of Arthur IL, Clayton Herschberger of Arthur IL, Elizabeth Smith and her husband Zachariah of California, Geneva Johnson of Ohio, Heather Massie and her husband Dr. James Massie of Nashville TN, Meagan Walsh and her husband Brett of Shorewood IL, Landon Kennel and his wife Gracie of Evergreen CO. Great- grandchildren: Wyatt Herschberger, Owen Herschberger, River Smith, Gibson Johnson, Marshall Johnson, Matthew Massie, Meredith Massie, Howard Walsh, Alana Walsh, Benjamin Walsh, and Colin Walsh. Step grandchildren: Traci Stain, Brian Behrends, Dean Behrends and Laura Anderson.
He is also survived by one brother, Eli Herschberger and his wife Vera of Sarasota FL. Two sisters: Anna Mae Graber of Kalona IA and Martha Ann Kaufman of Sarasota FL and a stepbrother, Lewis Diener and his wife Treva of Arthur, IL.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents and a stepmother, Susan Herschberger, his wife, Mary; one sister, Bertha Kauffman, and her husband, Eli, one brother, Levi D. Herschberger and his wife Sovilla and three brothers-in-law, Marvin Miller, Melvin Kaufman, and David Graber.
Henry was a lifelong farmer. His love of spring planting and fall harvest allowed him to be a part of and witness God’s blessings and giving back to the earth. He was presented with the Local Farmer of the Year award. Henry served on the Church World Service CROP assembly – through their program food was distributed to the needy in other countries.
Henry was an active member of the Arthur Mennonite Church. He took part in the original construction of the first building of the church. He along with another church member constructed the wooden cross that remains at the front of the church sanctuary. He was very active in the MCC relief sale, and he served as President for the Mennonite Disaster Service and in his words “made friends from around the world.”
Henry was a member of the Arthur Lions Club and he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award presented by the Lions Foundation as the highest form of recognition given to acknowledge an individual's dedication to humanitarian service. He served on the Moultrie/Douglas County Fair Board for many years and was instrumental in the early years of the tractor pull at the annual fair. He served as Drainage Commissioner for three different drainage districts.
Henry served on The Arthur Home Board for 47 years from 1970-2017. He was presented the Legacy Award for his years of service and contributions to the community by The Arthur Home. He and his wife Mary served as committee members to bring The Eberhardt Village to the community.
He and Mary traveled abroad numerous times into 5 continents, traveled to all 50 states and Motor coached across the country from Alaska to Key West. They were members of the Family Motor Coach Association making lifelong friends through conventions and rallies. He was an avid fisherman while spending time in the Florida Keys.
Henry was a private pilot and he and Mary would fly the family on vacations in their Cessna. At times they would fly to an airport for lunch and then return home to their work. He was also a trained pilot taking parachutists for their jumps.
His greatest joy came from spending time and traveling with his wife Mary of 75 years, time with his family, his children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren.

Sarah was born on February 28, 1936 in Arthur, Illinois. She was a daughter of Levi and Annie (Hochstetler) Jess. She married Ura Herschberger on April 2, 1957 in Arthur, Illinois. He passed away on March 8, 2017.
She is survived by one daughter, Verna Viola and her husband Jacob A. Miller of Arthur IL; one son, Levi Herschberger and his wife Elsie of Arthur IL; 15 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; one sister, Edna Yoder of Sarasota FL; one brother, John Jess of Arthur IL; three sisters-in-law; Sovilla Jess of Arthur IL, Fannie Mae Helmuth of Atwood IL, and Mrs. Andy (Frieda) Miller of Colorado.

Alvin E. Hershberger, age 83, of Nappanee, passed away at 4:15 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at his son’s residence. He was born on August 30, 1939 in Goshen to Ezra E. and Katie (Yoder) Harshberger. He lived in the Nappanee area since 1961.
On April 11, 1961 he married Esther Kuhns. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2015. On October 15, 2016 he married Mary Kauffman.
Al was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hershberger, Nappanee; children, Arlin (Nora Hochstetler) Hershberger, Wanda Hershberger, Carlisle (Marlene Eash) Hershberger, all of Nappanee, and Karen (LaVerne) Miller, Mio, MI; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Hershberger, Gambier, OH; brother-in-law, Noah (Sharon) Schrock, Nappanee; sisters-in-law, Rachel Hershberger, Katie Harshberger, both of Nappanee and Wilma Hershberger, Shipshewana.

Erma O. Hershberger 87, of 4552 TR 366, Millersburg, passed away at her residence on Thursday, November 10, 2022 following a period of declining health. She was born in Holmes County on January 6, 1935 to the late Ora J. and Sarah (Yoder) Miller. On October 24, 1957 she married Henry J. Hershberger who preceded her in death on May 26, 2020. Erma was a homemaker and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
She is survived by her three daughters, Marilyn (David) Yoder of Mt. Hope, Martha (Jacob) Hershberger of Millersburg, Ruth (Harvey) Bowman of the home; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Larry Sarah Hershberger of Millersburg; 26 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Alvin Anna Miller of Wooster, Mrs. Paul Mary Frey of Fredericksburg and Mrs. Joe L. Mary Miller of Millersburg.
In addition to her parents and her husband Henry, she was preceded in death by her son, Larry Hershberger; four grandchildren; her brother, Alvin O. Miller; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ada and Harry Wengerd.
Funeral services will be held at the Harvey Bowman residence, 4404 TR 366, Millersburg on Sunday, November 13, at 9:00 AM with Bishop Jonas A. Yoder officiating. Bishop Joseph J. Hershberger, 60, passed away Monday, December 26, 2022, at his home after an extended battle with cancer.
He was born Thursday, June 21,1962, in Maysville, Ohio, a son of the late Jonas and Mary (Gingerich) Hershberger. He married the former Mary L. Keim. They lived together thirty-nine blessed years. Joseph was ordained Minister in 2015 and later Bishop in 2019.
Surviving in addition to his wife Mary are his children, Mose (Rachel) Hershberger of Valley Bend, WV, Jonas (Lizzieann) Hershberger of Salesville, OH. , Andrew (Susan) Hershberger of Salesville, OH, Susan (John) Hostetler of Beverly, WV, Roy (Susan) Hershberger of Salesville, OH, Verna (Atlee) Gingerich of Salesville, OH.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was one brother, Emanuel Hershberger, 2 Sisters, Katie (Slabaugh) Hershberger, Esther (Keim) Hershberger, one stillborn daughter, two grandsons, four granddaughters.
Funeral Services are on Friday, December 30, 2022, the Eli Hershberger residence. Bishop Sam E. Hershberger will officiate and interment will follow in Tygart Valley Amish Cemetery. Rosia Marie Hershberger, 44, of Goshen died of natural causes at 8:00 pm on Monday, January 10, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born on November 28, 1977 in Garnett, KS, to Andy S. and Susan T. (Yoder) Miller. On May 20, 2005 in Topeka, she married Eugene A. Hershberger, he survives.
Survivors in addition to her husband are her father of Garnett, KS; five brothers, Sam (Melinda) Miller, Marcus (Irene) Miller, Kenneth (Becky) Miller all of Garnett, KS, Daniel (Velma) Miller of Marysville, KS, Eugene (Rebekah) Miller of Garnett; five sisters, Becky (Vernon) Miller, Debbie (David) Miller all of Garnett, KS, Loretta (Lavern) Miller of Middlebury, Veralene (Jeff) Stifter of Garnett, KS, Lorinda (Vernon) Yoder of Westphalia, KS and 44 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother. Rosia was a homemaker and was baptized in the Old Order Amish Church.
Visitation will be after 1:00 pm on both Wednesday, January 12, and Thursday, January 13, at the Glen Yoder Residence, 65901 County Rd. 33 Goshen. Funeral services will be at 9:30 am on Friday, January 14, at the same residence. Services will be conducted by Bishop Amos Wingard and the home ministers. Hershberger, Vira Gladys Miller
January 12, 1922 - November 23, 2022
January 12, 1922, marked the beginning of the life of Vira Gladys Miller Hershberger. It ended nearly 101 years later when she passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2022, as a resident of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) in Harrisonburg, Va. Born in rural Wellman, Iowa to Daniel J.S. and Catherine Blucker Miller, Vira attended Nira and Franklin Schools during her childhood. Thereafter, she left home to work to help support her family during the Depression years.
Vira's family included five brothers (Fred, John, Howard, Mervin and Willard) and two sisters (Irene and Marie). On Feb. 26, 1943, Vira married Reaford Hershberger of Milford, Neb. in Mercer, Pa., having met in Frytown, Iowa. Reaford was in the Army at the time, and following his discharge after the war, they returned to Iowa and farmed near Keota and South English. They left the farm and moved to nearby Keswick in 1958. By then they had four children, Larry, Donna, Keith and Joann. In 1969, they relocated to Harrisonburg, Va., where both worked at Eastern Mennonite College. Following Reaford's death in August 1993, Vira continued working at EMC in the food service area until retiring in 1995.
Vira's long life personified an abiding and unconditional devotion to her family, to her church, and to her God. She had a kind, caring, and forgiving heart which overflowed with love for everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Vira's generous spirit touched many as she always thought first of what she could do for others, never of herself. She was generous and unselfish in all aspects of her daily life, and a woman of deep and unshakable faith who put her trust in God's Word, committing much of it to memory. Until the last few months of her life, she could recite in order the 66 books of the Bible. A devout Christian in every sense of the word, she faithfully attended Park View Mennonite Church until she was no longer able. Vira was always grateful for life's simple things, like a cold drink of water, or sitting on her porch watching the birds and squirrels. She loved beauty and nature, loved to read, and wrote long, newsy letters to friends and family with perfect penmanship.
In addition to her husband, Vira's parents and seven siblings preceded her in death. Family members who survive are her four children, Larry (Betsy), Donna Litchfield, Keith and Joann (Jim) Henderson. Seven grandchildren also survive: Amy and David Hershberger, Emily Hershberger Parker, Thea Litchfield Campbell, Mila Litchfield Woolridge, Anna Henderson Jones, and Max Henderson; along with 11 great-grandchildren. A service celebrating Vira's life will be held at a later date.
Vira's family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sentara Hospice and at Oak Lea and Warsack House at VMRC for the care they provided her during the last several months of her life. Their sensitivity and concern for the family was also greatly appreciated.

Betty M. Hershey, age 93 of Gordonville, PA, passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. She was the wife of the late Warren W. Hershey, who passed away on June 19, 2016. She was born in Paradise Township, daughter of the late Aaron S. & Susan McGallicher Hershey.
She was a lifelong member of Hershey Mennonite Church, where she was involved with the sewing circle and taught Bible school. She volunteered with the New Holland Re-Uzit Shop. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the family farm, was a Shaklee Supervisor for over 20 years and they also owned and managed rental properties. Betty loved oil painting, quilting, and camping. She and her late husband traveled by motor home throughout the U.S. as well as Alaska, Canada and Nova Scotia. They also traveled to Bermuda, Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Surviving are 3 children: Karen wife of Rick Martin of New Holland, Doris wife of Don Neff of Paradise, Randall husband of Penny Simmons Hershey of Lancaster, 6 grandchildren: Matt husband of Amy Neff, Heather wife of Josh Muffley, Heidi Neff wife of James Duddy, Neil husband of Courtney Hershey, Brent husband of Casey Hershey and Drew Hershey, 8 great-grandchildren: Megan, Mackenzie, Judah and Jed Neff, Noah & Harper Muffley, Ava & Rowan Hershey and a sister Ellen Hershey Neff of Paradise. She was preceded in death by an infant sister Irene Hershey, sister Millie Hershey Beyer and a grandson Dustin Neff.
Funeral service will take place from the Hershey Mennonite Church, 401 Hershey Church Road, Kinzers, PA on Monday, August 8th at 11 a.m., with a viewing time from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Pastors Don Neff and Joseph Lab will be officiating.

Herhsey, Christian Donald

Christian Donald Hershey died unexpectedly on July 12, 2022, at the age of 66 from a massive heart attack. It is with grief and sadness that we write this obituary.
Chris was born on November 16, 1955, to Herman and Ella Hershey of Ladysmith, Wisconsin. There was a snowstorm raging that day and the roads were bad, but in typical Hershey determination, they found a way to get to the hospital. Chris was 19 when he married Darlene Fay Schrock on December 12, 1974. They set up housekeeping in Sheldon, Wisconsin where they had their first baby. And then they quickly had another baby. A brief move to Montana took place but they soon found themselves back in Wisconsin. More babies were born and a life full of memories was made.
Chris is survived by his wife of 47 years, Darlene Hershey; six children, Bevely (Marvin) Stutzman, Scott Hershey, Weldon (Linda) Hershey, Jerry (Haylee) Hershey, Shyann Hershey, and Clovis Hershey; twenty-six grandchildren; a beautiful great-granddaughter; ten siblings, Evelyn (Arthur) Kauffman, Dan (Jane) Hershey, Stan (Beth) Hershey, Rachel (Joel) Michaels, Jim (Gina) Hershey, Alan Hershey, Gerald Hershey, Wes (Wanda) Hershey, Abbie (Ken) Mast, Beth (Dale) Reinford; and a whole lot of nieces and nephews.
Chris is preceded in death by his parents Herman and Ella Hershey; his sister Lois Hershey; his brother-in-law Jim Hackman; and grandson Fane Christian Hershey.
A funeral service will be held for Christ at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 16th, 2022, at Northwoods Mennonite Church. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15th, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Northwoods Mennonite Church. Phoebe Ruth (Garber) Hershey, of Bridgewater, VA passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, VA as a result of a fall in her home.
Phoebe was born in South Boston, VA to the late John F. and Anna May (Wenger) Garber on October 4, 1936. She graduated from Drayton High School in Ontario in 1955 and Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, VA in 1959. She married John L. Hershey on June 11, 1960 in Burton, OH. They lived in Denbigh, VA; Charlottesville, VA; East Petersburg, PA; Swarthmore, PA; Silver Spring, MD; Toms Brook, VA; and Bridgewater, VA. She was employed as an elementary and high school teacher for many years. She also was a tax preparer, office manager and computer systems director. She served as interim pastor at Hyattsville Mennonite Church in 1993 and at Stephens City Mennonite Church in 2001. In 1996, she graduated from Eastern Mennonite Seminary with a Masters Degree in church leadership and was ordained in 2001 for special ministry and served as a chaplain at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital for about fifteen years. She had been an active member of Stephens City Mennonite Church since 2000. She was a life-long bird-watcher and gardener and enjoyed keeping up with her family, traveling, singing hymns and reading good literature.
In addition to her parents, Phoebe was preceded in death by her brothers, Leonard W. Garber and John F. Garber, Jr. and infant brother, Ethan Garber; her brothers-in-law, Arnold Cressman and Wally Bless; her sister-in-law, Carol Garber, and one great-grandson.
She is survived by her husband, John L. Hershey, Bridgewater, VA; three children: Virginia H. Kreider (wife of Kenneth L. Kreider), Metter, GA, Tamara G. Hershey (wife of Steven J. Mennerick), St. Louis, MO, and John R. Hershey (husband of Araceli [Orozco] Hershey, Winchester, MA); 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Rhoda Cressman, Scottdale, PA, Lois Lehman (wife of Milton Lehman) Ephrata, PA, Esther Garber, Richmond, VA, and Rachel Garber, Sawyerville, QC; and one brother, S. David Garber, Scottdale, PA; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Garber, Listowel, ON and Edith Garber, Twin Falls, ID.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Springdale Mennonite Church, 170 Hall School Rd., Waynesboro, VA, with Pastors James and Aldine Musser officiating. A visitation time will be held from 9 am until 10 am prior to the service at the church.

Thelma Marie (Weaver) Hershey, 85, of Lancaster, passed away of natural causes on February 20, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the loving wife of Nelson H. Hershey. She spent her adult life as a homemaker, dedicating her life to her family and church. She was a member of Rohrerstown Mennonite Church.
Thelma was a seamstress and did sewing and alterations for her family, friends, and others. She enjoyed flowers, working in her garden, and spending time with her family. She devoted time to Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, and Sewing Circle. She was a volunteer at Columbia Re-Uzit Shop and worked there for many years. She read her Bible daily, and for the many years, she read it through completely each year.
In addition to her husband Nelson, she is survived by children, Karen Roes (wife of Robert) of Carthage, NY, Clifford Hershey (husband of Mary Lou) of Mountville, PA, Lawrence Hershey (husband of Barbara) of Columbia, PA, Brian Hershey (husband of Kay) of Mountville, PA, and Carol Wenger (wife of Sherwin) of Lancaster, PA; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by siblings, Luke Weaver (Arlene, and the late Pauline), Edith Gehman (Paul), Lloyd Weaver (Naomi), and Rosene Martin (the late Leonard).
She was predeceased by her parents, the late Luke S. and the late Anna S. (Martin) Weaver, her step mother, the late Anna Mary (Martin) Weaver, and siblings Raymond Weaver (the late Arlene), Pearl Eberly (the late John), Irwin Weaver (the late Esther), Miriam Weaver (the late Lester), Charles Weaver (Cleo), and Emory Weaver (Joan).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Rohrerstown Mennonite Church, 601 Rohrerstown Rd., Lancaster, PA 17603. A viewing will be held the evening prior on Friday, February 25, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Interment will follow at Rohrerstown Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Hertzler, Alma Jane Martin Swartzendruber
January 5, 1925 - January 19, 2022
Alma Jane Martin Swartzendruber Hertzler, 97, of Mount Pleasant Mills, passed away peacefully at home in the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, after a time of declining health.
She was born in Lancaster County on Jan. 5, 1925, to the late Paul G. and Eva W. (Witmer) Martin.
She married Marvin E. Swartzendruber on Sept. 1, 1951. To this union were born Ruth C. of Reinholds, Pa. married to Paul G. Hollingshead; and Rosa J. Swartzendruber of Mount Pleasant Mills. Marvin died in 1992 after sharing 41 years of married life with Alma.
In November of 1999 Alma was married to Harry W. Hertzler who preceded her in death in June of 2017 at the age of 100.
Alma is survived by her two daughters, Ruth and Rosa; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law.
She is also survived by five stepsons, Joseph of Cumberland, Va., John Paul of Fairpaly, SC, Daniel of Corvallis, Mont., Michael of Meadville, Pa., and Henry of Tahlequah, Okla.; one stepdaughter, Lois Ann married to Philp Danner of Hanover, Pa.; 47 step-grandchildren, numerous step-great-grandchildren, and a few step-great-great-grandchildren.
Alma was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul C., Elvin, and Millard; and one sister, Marla. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, at Bethel Mennonite Church, 1377 Martin Brothers Road, Mount Pleasant Mills, where the funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, with the Bethel Mennonite Church Ministry officiating.
Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

Hertzler, Carolyn Weaver

Carolyn W. Hertzler, 96, through eight decades in Goshen a piano teacher, accompanist, mentor, and working mother, died peacefully near Philadelphia on October 13 [2022] of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Carolyn was born in La Junta, Colorado, the first of three children of Martin and Esther Weaver. Her grandchildren recall her telling of walking a horse across her wooden porch because she loved hearing its footsteps.
In 1936 her parents abandoned farming to the Dust Bowl and moved the family to Virginia, piano in tow. Martin had worked in Near East Relief in Aleppo (now in Syria) after World War I; Carolyn later donated his diary and photographs as evidence of the Armenian genocide. Martin became a truck driver, and Esther later operated a convalescent home in Waterford and worked as a licensed practical nurse.
When her high school in Denbigh (now Newport News) ended after 10th grade in 1942, Carolyn entered Goshen College at the age of 16 to study “business,” meaning shorthand and other secretarial skills. Faculty recognized her for outstanding musical ability and encouraged her to stay for a four-year degree, whereupon her parents and siblings also moved to Goshen. She majored in music and studied piano, paying her way by serving as secretary to college administrators.
Beginning in college, Carolyn often accompanied students and faculty members, usually on piano but sometimes on harpsichord. Her alto voice blended with many a choir, caroling, and congregational hymn singing over the years. She went back to school in her 50s and earned a Master of Music degree in piano performance from Indiana University in 1982. She taught private piano students in her home almost her entire adult life, and until her late 80s accompanied her children, her students, and other musicians in countless performances. At 91 she still held a job playing piano and organ at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Goshen. Despite losing much of her memory to Alzheimer’s, she played the keyboard competently until less than two weeks before her death.
Carolyn helped found the Goshen Elkhart Music Teachers Association in 1985, and frequently served as treasurer, secretary, or president. She was active in the Indiana Music Teachers Association, which awarded her a Distinguished Service Award, and the National Music Teachers Association, which made her a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music and gave her a lifetime achievement award. GEMTA soon ceased operations when she was unable to continue active involvement, but the South Bend Music Teachers Association made her a lifetime member in 2018.
She mentored other teachers, especially GEMTA members. She played piano in “Messiah” and hymnsings every year. She was active for decades in the American Association of University Women, and helped organize community activities ranging from teaching French to elementary school children in the 1960s to recycling motor oil in the 1980s. She loved nature and cared about protecting it. When people asked for her help, she helped. She visited her mother in a nursing home every day for years before her mother’s death.
Except for five years in Elkhart and six in Muskegon, Michigan, Carolyn lived in Goshen from 1942 to 2018. She married Paul W. Hertzler in 1948, and they raised three children. Paul worked as a photographer, then in middle management in various factories (most recently Goshen Rubber Co.), then founded what is now Hertzler Systems, a Goshen company that provides statistical process control software and analysis designed to minimize errors in manufacturing. Carolyn played a key role in the early operations management of the company.
Paul died in 1994. In 1996 Carolyn began an almost 20-year marriage with Harold E. Bauman, who had recently lost his wife Elizabeth, a college friend of Carolyn’s. Carolyn loved being part of both extended families, and entertained and visited them often. Harold died in 2016 just after they moved into a retirement apartment at Greencroft. She moved near Philadelphia in 2018 to be close to family.
Carolyn is survived by her children Dan Cantú-Hertzler (Deb) of Philadelphia, Larry Hertzler (Linda) of Carmel, Indiana, and Nancy Hertzler of Cincinnati; grandchildren Jeremy Hertzler, Kristi Schaefer (Nathan), Lara Cantu-Hertzler, Anthony Hertzler, Evan Hertzler (Lis), Lauren Pobiak (Aaron), and Matt Hertzler; great grandchildren Clyde Weaver Alexander Schaefer and Willow Ana Hertzler; her younger brother G. Eugene Weaver (Ruby) of New Bern, North Carolina (formerly Elkhart); former in-laws Roger Troyer (Carolyn and Gene’s younger sister Marian Troyer died in 2018), Elam Hertzler, John Bender, and Galen Swope; 18 nieces and nephews and their families; Harold’s children Philip Bauman (Connie) of Goshen; John Bauman (Susan Ebersole) and David Bauman (Linda Taylor), both of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Rebecca Bauman (Jeanne Keenan passed away in 2016) of South Pasadena, California; seven of Harold’s grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; countless students, colleagues, and friends, including Carol Oyer of Goshen (with Carolyn a four-year member of the Goshen College Gospel “Quartette”) and Mary Kay King of West Liberty, Ohio, the last participants in Carolyn’s 75-year “circle letter” with college classmates; and dear friends of more than 60 years from her time in Muskegon, Ellen Rockwood of North Muskegon and Fran Torresen of Belfast, Maine.
Memorial arrangements are pending. Interment is to be at Violett Cemetery in Waterford. Contributions may be made in memory of Carolyn W. Irene B. Hess, 98, of Leola, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Fairmount Homes.
She was born on November 17, 1923 in Akron to the late Charles and Mabel (Winey) Benner and was the wife of the late Reuben B. Hess.
She was a member of Metzler Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School.
Irene graduated from West Earl Township High School and worked at the Miller Hess Shoe Company until her marriage. After getting married, she was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and making braided rugs for her family and the MCC Relief organization.
Irene is survived by three children, Kenneth B., husband of the late Suzanne (Ruhl) Hess of Lancaster, J. Marlin Hess, husband of Kay Stoltzfus of Gordonville, and C. Lorraine Hess of Leola; two grandchildren, Brian, husband of Jenai (Young) Hess, and Julie (Hess), wife of Troy Miskelley; and two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Evelyn Benner, Robert W. Benner, Harold W. Benner, Ruth Leaman, and C. Dwight Benner.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, from 6 to 8 PM at Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. Ninth Street, Akron. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Metzler Mennonite Church, 515 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Interment will be private in Groffdale Mennonite Cemetery.

James L. High, 72, of Strasburg, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 14, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Born In Lancaster, he was the son of the late Mahlon and Gladys (Mellinger) High. He was the loving husband of Cynthia M. (Breneman) High for 51 years.
Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and had a great passion and love for life. He loved spending time with his family, playing games, and attending the sporting events of his daughters and granddaughters. He was an active member of Willow Street Mennonite Church, and enjoyed using his time, energy and gifts to help others. He was an avid Philly sports fan and loved basketball and golf. He particularly enjoyed golfing with his sons-in-law and his weekly golf outing with friends.
A graduate of Lampeter-Strasburg High School, Jim was passionate about dairy farming, and was a visionary in herd management and Holstein genetics and breeding. He was self-employed as a dairy nutrition and feed salesman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Teresa Zook, wife of Anthony Zook, Pottstown; Tina Harnish, wife of Darrel Harnish, Lancaster; and Tammy Hershberger, wife of Kevin Hershberger, Lancaster; and a son-in-law, Greg Petersheim, Lancaster. Also surviving are six granddaughters and three sisters: Norma Forry, Jean Lapp, and Dorothy Breneman. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tonya Petersheim.
The funeral service will be private, with traditional interment at the Willow Street Mennonite Church cemetery. The service will be available for livestream via the Willow Street Mennonite Church website beginning at 2:30pm on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.

Leslie S. High, 39 of rural Cantril, Iowa, passed away unexpectantly Thursday October 20, 2022 from a farm incident.
He was born December 7 1982, in Keosauqua, Iowa, the eighth son of Mervin and Martha High.
Leslie married Charlene Zimmerman on August 28, 2004, and they were blessed with four children. He was a member of North View Mennonite church. A loving husband and a devoted daddy. He was a dairy farmer since 2007 and took an active interest in people.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Charlene, Tristan, Danica, Landon and Riley, all of the home. His mother Martha High of Cantril, IA, eight siblings; Lonita (Leonard) Burkholder of Edina, Mo; Lavon (Martha) High of Cantril, IA; Lucinda (Eugene) Weiler of Mt. Sterling, IA; Kathy (Allen Jr.) Martin of Rutledge, Mo; Lorelle (Galen) Weiler of Rutledge, Mo; Karlin (Joannee) High of Memphis, Mo; The Zimmerman family, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Mervin High and grandparents, Melvin and Verna High and Aaron and Amanda Shirk.
Funeral Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, October 27, 2022, at the North View Mennonite Church, north of Arbela, Missouri.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2022, at the Hillcrest Mennonite Community Center south of Memphis, Missouri.
Interment will be in the North View Mennonite Cemetery.

Mary was a member of the Schaefferstown Mennonite Church and loved spending time with her family.

Judy Lynn Hindal, age 55, of Eldon, Missouri, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born February 24, 1966 in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Melvin N. and Phoebe Ann (Wenger) Sensenig.
On June 6, 1987, she was united in marriage to Stephen Dennis Hindal. To this union seven children were born. She was a member of Ridge View Mennonite Church and was a special education teacher at Ridge View Mennonite School.
Survivors include her husband, Steve Hindal of the home; her parents, Melvin and Phoebe Ann of Terre Hill, Pennsylvania; seven children, Cheri Ebersole and husband Gordon of Barnett, Missouri, Rosilee Statt and husband Garrison of California, Missouri, Austin Hindal and wife Joletta of Barnett, Missouri, Cheyenne Zook and husband Myron of Olean, Missouri, Kendra Hindal, Bryant Hindal and Cherish Hindal all of Eldon, Missouri; six grandchildren, Nicole, Ariana, Avery, Reagan and Chloe Ebersole and Breelyn Zook; her siblings, Gary Sensenig and wife Ann and Anthony Sensenig and wife Pam all of Terre Hill, Pennsylvania, Jean Hindal and husband Tim of Grandin, Missouri and Carol Reinford and husband Daryl of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and a host of other relatives and friends.

Lloyd Jay Hochstedler, 77, of Middlebury, died at 8:20 am on Tuesday, October 18, [2022] at his residence; he had been in declining health for the past three years. He was born on August 15, 1945 in Peru to Jacob J. and Barbara (Miller) Hochstedler. On July 11, 1964, in Middlebury, he married Katie Viola Nissley, she survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mary Margaret (Ron) Huber of Goshen, Ruby Ann Hochstedler of Elkhart, Nancy Kay (Mike) Brown of Chardon, OH; three grandchildren, Jacob Andrew Brown, Ryan Michael Brown, Marisa Yichen Huber; two sisters, Ada (John) Yoder of Middlebury, Erma (David) Miller of Sarasota, FL; three brothers, Walter (Martha) Hochstedler of Middlebury, Albert (Ruby) Hochstedler of Kokomo, Olen Hochstedler of Kokomo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Mattie and Lloyd (Bud) Miller; a sister-in-law, Loretta Hochstedler; and a nephew, Gary Schrock.
Lloyd had worked at Coachman Industries in Middlebury, and Merle's Electric in Goshen. He then retired from the Middlebury School Corporation as head of maintenance after nearly 25 years of employment. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working on puzzles and was a member of First Mennonite Church, Middlebury.
Visitation will be from 3:00 - 5:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday, October 21, at the Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street Middlebury. Edna C. Hochstetler, 74, of Shipshewana, died at 1:15 am, on Sunday, March 6 at The Maples at Waterford Crossing, Goshen. She was born on September 2, 1947, in LaGrange, to Christian and Fanny (Schlabach) Christner. On January 22, 1977, in Goshen, she married Daniel "Dan" D. Hochstetler, he died February 13, 2018.
Surviving are daughter, Deb (Dennis) Mast of Kimmell; son, Danny (Gloria) Hochstetler of Topeka; granddaughter, Alicia (Tyler) Clark; two great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Jacy Clark; two step-grandsons, Jake Mast and Matthew Miller; sister, Mary (Ferman) Miller of Goshen; two brothers, Amos (Fannie) Christner of Delhi, IA, Willy (Esther) Christner of Shipshewana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a grandson, Kyle Bunten.
Edna was a member of Maple Grove Church. She loved listening to country and gospel music. She and her sister Mary were the owner/operators of Kids Kreation, where she enjoyed sewing doll clothing. Edna also enjoyed camping with her family and friends.
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 9 and one hour prior to the 10:00 am funeral service on Thursday, March 10 at Maple Grove Church, 806 S. Main Street, Topeka. Fannie M. Hochstetler, 95, of Goshen, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 6:55 pm, on Friday, July 29, [2022] while surrounded by family at Greencroft Health Care in Goshen. She was born on December 24, 1926, in Sturgis, MI, to Jacob E. and Susan (Miller) Bontrager. On March 25, 1948 in Sturgis, MI she married Emil M. Hochstetler, he died August 27, 1999.
Surviving are her son, Gordon R. (Darlene) Hochstetler of Kendallville; daughter, Carolyn (Dale) Neumeyer of Reedsville, WI; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a sister, Katie Bontrager of Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Elaine Strauser and Cheryl Hochstetler; an infant son, Darrell Lee Hochstetler; two brothers, Eli Bontrager and Albert Bontrager; and sister, Lydia Bontrager.
Fannie was a homemaker, seamstress for 30 years, and made dolls. She sold Avon for many years and worked at Artisan Interior in Middlebury. She loved music and was part of many local choir groups. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Middlebury.

Laban E. Hochstetler, 95, of Goshen, formerly of Middlebury, died at 8:55 pm, on Monday, May 23 [2022] at Goshen Hospital. He was born on January 27, 1927, in Elkhart County, to Elam and Eliza (Bender) Hochstetler. On October 4, 1949, in Middlebury, he married Agnes Bontrager, she died October 23, 2020.
Surviving are four daughters, Joanna (Oren) Yoder of Partridge, KS, Judy (Willard) Martin of Goshen, Elsie (Jason) Schrock of Halsey, OR, Mary Gingerich of Plain City, OH; three sons, Edwin Hochstetler of Goshen, Nathan (Jan) Hochstetler of Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Canada, John (Denise) Hochstetler of Middlebury; 29 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Miriam Graber of Goshen, Marietta (Jon) Stoltzfus of Goshen; three brothers, Daniel Hochstetler of Goshen, Noah Hochstetler of Elkhart, Joseph Hochstetler of Minerva, OH.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two sons, Wilbur Hochstetler, Mark Sweeney; two sons-in-law, Mark Gingerich, Lowell Mast; two grandchildren, Jaran Martin, Andrew Yoder; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Herschberger, Rhoda Hochstetler; two brothers, Samuel and Walter Hochstetler.
He was a member of Fairhaven Mennonite Church and a dairy farmer. Laban was a quiet sort of man, not one to stick out in a crowd. He was busy though in his low key, behind the scenes sort of way. Never having completed high school himself, he helped build Clinton Christian School before he had school age children himself and served on its board for many years. He supported Heifer Project International and CROP and encouraged others to give as well. He looked forward to the MCC meat canner coming to Goshen every year and served as treasurer of that committee for many years. He served on the cleanup crew of the MCC Mennonite Relief Sale for many years and thoroughly enjoyed all those interactions. Laban was instrumental in beginning the services at the Elkhart County Jail on Sunday afternoons and regularly attended services at the Pendelton Correction Facility. He took a keen interest in Gospel Echoes Ministry and supported Agnes as she graded Bible study courses for them. Though he stayed at home on his diary farm, his heart was with his siblings and children who were serving in missions. He found ways to show his support and visited as often as he could to encourage them and get to know their friends. He was the one who made sure that the missionaries in the North got their needs met through the food truck that left IN every year. And later, he and Agnes spent many years cooking at Camp Andrews after getting to know the folks at Fellowship Haven. When Mark Sweeney joined the family, Project Promise became a huge part of their lives. In his retirement years Laban made countless clothes drying racks and wooden crates to sell at the Depot to raise funds for Project Promise.
Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 5:00 - 8:00 pm on Saturday, May 28 at Fairhaven Mennonite Church, 13513 State Road 4, Goshen. Levi J. Hochstetler, age 90 of Nappanee, IN, died at 4:51 pm on Monday, June 6, 2022 at Elkhart General Hospital. He was born on March 28, 1932 in Nappanee to Joseph and Mary (Yoder) Hochstetler. Mr. Hochstetler lived his entire life in the Elkhart County area. In 1958, Levi married Dorothy “Jean” Miller. She preceded him in death in 1983. On April 7, 1984 he married Susan Thomas in South Bend, IN. Levi was a member of the Living Gospel Church in Nappanee.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Hochstetler of Nappanee; 4 children: Greg Hochstetler of South Bend, Luke (Janice) Hochstetler of Burr Oak, MI, John (Amy) Hochstetler of Elkhart, IN, and Sherry Hochstetler of Nappanee; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Levi was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, daughter-in-law Jane Hochstetler; 3 brothers: Harvey, Eli, and Samuel Hochstetler; and 5 sisters: Amanda Yoder, Elizabeth Yoder, Edna Hochstetler, Sarah Mast, and Anna Mast.

Lois M. Hochstetler, 88, of Goshen, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Greencroft Healthcare.
She was born September 7, 1934, in Wellman, Iowa to Daniel and Leona (Fisher) Miller.
On June 20, 1954, she married Leo Clifford Hochstetler in Kalona, Iowa. He died Febraury 16, 2003.
Survivors include two sons, Craig (Connie) Hochstetler of Sierra Vista, Arizona and Ritch (Charlotte) Hochstetler of Elkhart; two grandchildren, Austin Hochstetler and Leslie (Tyler) Huston; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Wyatt, Laney and Jase Huston; three sisters, LaVerta (Carl) Yoder of Wellman, Iowa, Linda (LaVerne) Messer of Wayland, Iowa and Marcia (Ellis) Miller of Kalona, Iowa and three brothers, Carl (Marge) Miller, Bob (Sheryl) Miller and Warren (Paula) Miller, all of Kalona, Iowa.
A longtime resident of Shipshewana, she moved to Goshen with her husband in 1999. Mrs. Hochstetler was an active member of Clinton Frame Church where she enjoyed participating in many of their activities including Sunday School.
She loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Visitation will be Friday, November 25, 2022, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Clinton Frame Church where a 10 a.m., Saturday, November 26, funeral service will be held.
Burial will be at Clinton Frame Cemetery, at a later date.

Lydia Mae Hochstetler, age 99 years, 4 months and 4 days, of Nappanee, IN, passed away at 6:20 pm Tuesday, November 8, 2022. She was born on July 4, 1923 in Nappanee to Levi and Emma (Hochstetler) Stutzman. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and a life time area resident. On November 30, 1944 she married Milo Hochstetler. He preceded in death after 57 years of marriage on December 7, 2001.
Surviving are her four children: Jerry Hochstetler of Gary, IN, Elizabeth (Glenn) Stutzman of Nappanee, Gilbert Hochstetler of Wabash, IN, and Andrew (Lisa) Hochstetler of Bremen, IN; 6 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia Kohler.
Lydia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Steven Hochstetler; a great grandson; and 11 siblings.

Marvin E. Hochstetler, 83, of Goshen, died at 2:35 pm, on Wednesday, June 29 [2022] at his residence. He was born on January 9, 1939, in Nappanee, to Eli J. and Sarah J. (Miller) Hochstetler.
Surviving are two sons, Stewart (Mary Ruth) Hochstetler of Goshen and Michael Todd (Inez) Hochstetler of Elkhart; three daughters, Debra Elaine (Marion) Lehman of Goshen, Peg Miller of White Pigeon, MI, Janet German of White Pigeon, MI; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Ellen Chupp of Nappanee; brother, Earl Hochstetler of Nappanee; and sister-in-law, Vera Hochstetler of Goshen; and a special family friend, Ray Troyer of Middlebury.
He was preceded in death by his parents; the mother of his children, Lorraine Miller; five brothers, Willis, Jesse, Omer, Glen, and Lonnie Hochstetler; five sisters, Verda Hochstetler, Edna Chupp, Lovina Schweitert, Sylvia Lehman, and Mattie Yoder.
Marvin was a steel builder for Superior Rigging & Erecting for over 30 years. He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and enjoyed hunting/fishing and traveling.

Olen “James” Hochstetler, age 83, of Topeka, IN passed away on December 25, 2022 at Orchard Pointe Health Campus in Kendallville, IN following a seven year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born January 15, 1939, the son of Omer J. & Elizabeth R. (Ringler) Hochstetler in Honeyville, IN. He married Barbara Ellen Feightner on September 21, 1957.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Hochstetler of Topeka, IN; three children, Jim (Tammy) Hochstetler of Topeka, IN, Jody (Mike) Myers of Wolcottville, IN, and Jana (Phil) Taylor of Bucyrus, OH; four grandchildren, JD (Sherry) Hochstetler, Jennifer (Mike) Frey, Brad (Jessica) Hochstetler, and Mandy (Tim) Tomecko; seven great-grandchildren, Regan, Stella, Sterling, Kyle, Karson, Ava, Brantley, & Halle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Calvin Hochstetler and Bill Hochstetler.
James graduated from Topeka High School in 1957. Along with farming, he co-owned and operated Hochstetler and Sons and was the owner of Topeka Seed and Stove for many years. He was also a member of Topeka Mennonite Church for several decades and an avid IU Basketball and Indianapolis Colts fan. James had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes. He always wanted to win the lottery so he could buy every FFA member a jacket. James especially enjoyed his grandchildren and his grandog, Trooper .
A funeral service will be held in James honor at 1 pm on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South; Ligonier, IN 46767. Pastor Harold Gingerich will officiate. A private family burial will take place following the service at Eden Cemetery in Topeka.
Family and friends will be received from 11am - 1 pm on Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

July 4, 1932 - March 7, 2022
Sarah Ann Hochstetler, age 89 of Nappanee, IN, died at 11:45am on Monday, March 7, 2022 at her daughter’s residence. Sarah was born on July 4, 1932 in Bremen, IN to Daniel E. and Susie (Borkholder) Hochstetler. On February 7, 1952 Sarah married Willis D. Hochstetler in Nappanee. He preceded her in death after more than 62 years of marriage on June 2, 2014. Sarah was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.
She is survived by her 17 children: Judy (Lester) Yoder of Middlebury, IN, Amanda (Perry) Hershberger of Mio, MI, Dorothy (Willie) Hochstetler of Nappanee, Vernon (Gwen) Hochstetler of Plymouth, IN, Marvin (Cathy) Hochstetler of Nappanee, Minerva (Glen) Knepp of Topeka, IN, Edith (Gilbert) Schrock of New Paris, IN, Willis Jr. (Jane) Hochstetler, Gerald (Anita) Hochstetler of Goshen, IN, Lora Beachy of Nappanee, Cora (Emery) Miller of Milford, IN, Miriam (Lamar) Kauffman of Nappanee, Leander (Friend Krista) Hochstetler of Bremen, Wyman (Edna) Hochstetler of Wakarusa, IN, Perry Hochstetler of Bremen, Aden (Amanda) Hochstetler of Nappanee, and Homer (Jolene) Hochstetler of Bremen; 72 grandchildren; 141 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; 3 sisters: Elizabeth Slabaugh of Nappanee, Minerva Chupp of Nappanee, and Lydia Ann Hochstetler of Sarasota, FL; 2 brothers, Perry Hochstetler of Ligonier, IN, and Raymond (Rosemary) Hochstetler of Nottowa, MI; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Hochstetler of Bremen.
Mrs. Hochstetler was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 2 stillborn children, Ernest and Anna Hochstetler; and 2 brothers, Eli and John Hochstetler.
Friends and family may call after 2 pm on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 and all-day Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at the Melvin Helmuth residence (276 Beech Rd, Nappanee, IN 46550). Funeral services will take place at 9:30am, Thursday, March 10, 2022 also at the Melvin Helmuth residence with Home Ministers of the Old Order Amish Church officiating. Burial will follow at Borkholder Cemetery, Nappanee.
Hollinger, Jay L.
September 16, 1929 - September 9, 2022
Jay L. Hollinger, 92, formerly of Lancaster, passed away at UPMC Lititz on Friday 9/9/2022.He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Lloyd and Mary (Rutt) Hollinger. Jay's first wife, Dorothy Ann (Hahn) Hollinger died April 8, 2001, and his second wife, Audrey J. (Myer) Shertzer Hollinger died November 12, 2020.
He graduated from Manheim Township High School and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for his football career, and then graduated from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College where he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for playing Soccer. At the age of nine, Jay's right arm was amputated below the elbow, which made his sports prowess even more impressive.
Jay worked with his father who owned Hollinger's Meat Products in Lancaster, and then worked in sales for Kunzler & Company. He was a member of East Petersburg Rotary Club, served as Chief of East Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company for 13 years, and he served on the board of Friendship Community.
Jay was a member of Hempfield Church of the Brethren, where he served as a moderator. With wife Audrey, he attended Lancaster Evangelical Free Church, and they went on several overseas missions trips.
Surviving Jay are his three daughters, Sherry H., wife of Andy Farkas of Fairfield, Jayne L., wife of Ray Hutchison of Lititz, and Patti, wife of Mark Webb of Mount Joy; daughter-in-law, Stacy Hollinger Main of Holtwood; Stepchildren, Karen, wife of Jere Rutt, Mike Shertzer, husband of Amy, and Kathy, wife of Jake Burns; his sister Rosie Sorrentino of Annville; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and 8 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wives, Dorothy and Audrey, Jay was preceded in death by his son, Jay Scott Hollinger, and stepson, Matthew Shertzer.
The Hollinger family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all of Jay's extended family, his personal friends, church family, and business acquaintances for their friendship and love. They also thank the staff of Oak Leaf Manor North for the personal care given to Jay.

Holsopple, Shirley White
March 29, 1950 - June 25, 2022
Shirley W. Holsopple, 72, of Goshen, passed away Saturday, June 25, [2022] at Goshen Hospital.
She was born March 29, 1950, in Somerville, New Jersey.
On July 29, 1972, she married Dennis E. Holsopple in Morristown, New Jersey.
He survives along with her parents, Fred B. and Dorothy E. (DeWitt) White II, of Montville, New Jersey; two children, Lisa (Matt) Schmidt of Danville, California and Kent Holsopple of San Ramon, California; two grandchildren, Carter and Colette and a brother, Fred B. White III of Mendham, New Jersey.
Shirley had always loved children and education. As a teenager, she was a playground director and later went on to Goshen College to receive her bachelor’s in education and Olivet Nazarene University for her masters. Shirley taught for over 30 years in various schools, including 25 plus years in Goshen Community Schools as a beloved kindergarten teacher. She went on to enjoy teaching preschool at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elkhart for 4 years in her retirement. As much as she loved teaching, the joy of her life was her family and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Cremation will take place at Yoder-Culp Crematory and a Celebration of Life service will be held on July 16, 2022, at 2pm at Waterford Mennonite Church in Goshen, Indiana.
